Sometimes Native American petroglyphs look like birds, but they’re not. Sometimes they are birds, but people don’t know which birds or what those that bird was meant to represent.

There are ways to solve some of these mysteries. We start by taking a look at the iconography from a southwestern tribe that has been undisturbed for thousands of years, the Huichol. I share their description and imagery of a few sacred birds.
