The story of the Hopi afterworld based on Harold Courlander’s Fourth World of the Hopis. Since Courlander published his ethnography in 1971 I presume there is some amount of religious syncretism that has woven a few Christian flavored elements into the Ancestral Puebloan story of the afterlife. The fiery pit into which bad people are thrown may be one. However, there are also details that are consistent with ancient tellings of the afterlife in groups throughout the Uto-Aztecan southwest such as the happy dead living amongst flowers. See if you can spot any other details that sound uniquely indigenous.
