10,000 to 35,000 years ago there was an ice age inland sea in Searles Valley, CA. As the water evaporated it left these calcified pinnacles called “tufa” that stand up to 150 ft high. 
Some in my family think the drive across the desert over to the tufa is the highlight of this little side trip.
